InstaMekan ("InstaVenue" in Turkish) was a location-based social app popular in Turkey. Users could check in at restaurants, cafes, and nightlife spots, share photos, and read reviews. It was essentially Foursquare meets Instagram, tailored for the Turkish market. The app had hundreds of thousands of active Turkish users at its peak.

When Instagram added location tagging, geostickers, and Stories, it absorbed every use case that made InstaMekan popular. Users could now share their location, tag venues, and add reviews—all within Instagram, where their friends already were. InstaMekan's user base migrated to Instagram, and the app lost relevance. A classic case of a platform feature killing a standalone app.
Key Lesson
If your app is one feature away from being redundant on a major platform, that feature is coming. Build something platforms can't or won't replicate.
